how to stop self harming or at least try

(please don't snap rubber bands on your wrists. it doesn't help at all because it's still self harm.)

take up boxing

sometimes we are required to exert our pain and frustration physically, and there's nothing wrong with that. please however, do not do it on yourself and do not do it in a way that hurts you. sometimes going at a punching bag for hours is the best solution rather than harming yourself. this is mainly for people who either hit themselves or other things.

punch your pillow

it's an alternative to the boxing if you can't do that. lash out at your pillows and keep hitting until you don't feel the need to harm yourself anymore.↲

draw long deep slashes as hard as you can into a piece of paper

this one is more for people who resort to cutting, but it can help with other kinds of self harm as well. it kind of insinuates that you're pushing into the paper as deep as you can so it rips it open instead of your own skin. you can also do this in public if need be because it'll just look like you're drawling.

go outside and rip up grass or something similar with your hands

this one's more targeted towards people who rip out their hair. instead of ripping out your own, rip out a little bit of the earth's.

tell yourself that scars are not beautiful

some people think of their scars as symbolism that they've survived through awful things and overcome them, but you don't need that to remember. you're here. you don't need scars to tell you that. you may think of them as nothing now, but imagine yourself in the future and your children questioning them. as an ex-cutter, i can honestly say that scars don't remind you that you're strong and overcome things. they just remind you that your life was utter hell once upon a time and it hurts to see them and know that those awful memories are forever engraved into your body.↲
