Alex

As if time froze, David found himself standing in Alex's apartment, a mixture of emotions swirling within him. On one hand, there was a palpable curiosity, a desire to delve deeper into the intricacies of their connection, to unravel the mysteries that lingered between them. Yet, on the other hand, there was a sense of apprehension, a fear of what he might uncover, of the potential complexities that awaited. Despite his efforts to stay composed, his heart raced with anticipation, his mind teetering on the edge of uncertainty. In this suspended moment, the weight of their shared history and the possibilities of their future hung in the air, enveloping them in a haze of introspection and anticipation.

"So, how did this happen?" David asked casually, successfully avoiding raising any suspicion with Alex.

"Well, I have to admit. I was firm in saying no, up until last night. It just didn't feel right, trying to secure a CEO position by deceiving so many people." She savored a bite of her ice cream. "And, you know, I really don't like lying to people," she added, looking at David with a smile. "As you know, I'm not that good at it either. So I was going to say no. You must think I'm so cold for not wanting to help your friend out."

Despite the polite expectation of his response, Alex knew it wouldn't deeply affect her. She could understand if he thought she acted cold, but it didn't alter her own feelings about the situation. What intrigued her, however, was the outcome David was secretly rooting for.

David found himself drawn to her eyes, responding with a smile. A small smudge of ice cream lingered on the edge of her mouth. Chuckling, he mused about their situation, feeling like they really were in a Hallmark movie, one cliché scene after another. Yet, uncontrollably, he found himself overcome by a desire to savor that lingering bit of ice cream from her lips. The softness of those lips beckoned him, enticing him to indulge in the fantasy of pressing them firmly against his own.

Caught off guard by his reaction, Alex queried, "What?" His unexpected response wasn't among the possibilities she had considered. Either he would agree or disagree, but did neither and just laugh at the idea. She couldn't quite grasp its meaning.

"No, I'm sorry. My mind got distracted. Please, go on," David urged, refocusing on the conversation.

Deciding not to dwell on it, she brushed it off and continued, injecting a playful banter, "Really, David? Two minutes into my story, and you're already bored? You did ask, you know? Let's cut to the chase." She sighed, "Initially, I was inclined to say no. My principles and all that jazz. But then, I realized he genuinely needed my help, and being the virtuous person I am, I couldn't let my principles deny him assistance." She gazed at David, who had paused mid-bite, his eyes fixed on her. Amid her laughter, she couldn't help but feel an undeniable closeness to him. "No, just kidding. I'm not exactly a saint. Initially, my heart wasn't overflowing with kindness, let's put it that way."

Despite the absurdity of the situation, sharing it with him felt oddly comforting. He had labeled them friends, and in that moment, she agreed wholeheartedly.

David laughed in response, though a subtle crack hinted at the facade. Needing a moment to collect himself, he focused on his dessert, tapping his brownie a few times. When he looked back at Alex, the friendly smile had returned. "So, what happened?" he asked, seamlessly shifting the focus back to her tale.

"Well, something did happen." Alex cast an innocent glance at her dessert, and David couldn't help but chuckle, finding her charming.

Leaning back, David shifted his focus directly toward Alex, inquiring, "What? Another minor disaster on the horizon?"

Alex responded with a spontaneous grin, "Well, yes." She expertly combined a bit of ice cream and brownie on her spoon, savoring the delightful mix. David's mind briefly wandered, envisioning the desire he longed to witness her face like that while being intimately close to her. In that moment, he appreciated the fact that not every scene he envisioned seemed Hallmark-proof.
