"I got this from a place called The Green Man, back at Halyciane." Counselor Gomez shifted her grey cardigan to the side as she lit up her Dragon's Blood incense. She breathed in the smoke once it began to rise. "A man who worked there told me that Dragon's Blood helps protect and strengthen our aura from negativity. I'm not so sure about any of that stuff, but doesn't it smell amazing?"

I threw her a small reassuring nod as the smoke filled the air with a soft and sweet amber-like musk. It did an excellent job at setting a calming mood in her office.

"So-" She warmly smiled as she took her seat right before me. "How are you?"

"I'm good." I answered simply with my winter sniffles.

"And your father?" She quickly followed up.

I couldn't help but stall a reply as my chest instantly tightened the second she mentioned him. "W-What about him?"

"Well yesterday was parent-teacher conference and he was the only parent that didn't show up." She shrugged without a single trace of suspicion or readable gesture worth noting.

"M-Maybe he didn't know about it." I dipped my head downwards to look at my feet levitating just above the tiled floor. "I didn't know about it."

She quietly laughed. "You didn't have to, that's why it's called a parent-teacher conference." She began rummaging through her drawer to grab her usual journal that she'd use to write on whenever she'd talk to me. "Now trust me, I know parents can get busy and things obviously happen all the time, but this is his third year in a row missing the conference."

"Well have you tried contacting him?" I did a minimal shrug.

"Of course." She nodded. "As a matter of fact, all our calls and e-mails have gone unnoticed to the point that I've had to result to bringing this matter to your attention since you're now the only chance we have of getting in touch with him." She leans forward with a careful gaze. "Is there an updated way to contact your father? A new email? A new number perhaps?"

"D-Did I do something wrong?" My voice cracked out in fear as I wondered if I had gotten in trouble or have done something bad that could potentially make me suffer a beating from father.

She quickly she raised her hands up the second she noticed my fearful expression. "Oh no hun, not at all! You're behavior has been more than exemplary, especially your grades." When she notices how tense I've become, she doesn't hesitate to shift into a gentle tone to calm me down. "I'm simply just asking because-because look, this is a very small town and as your counselor I genuinely believe that kids like you you deserve to achieve such very big dreams."

"Kids like me?" Confusion flooded through my veins.

"Yes!" She ecstatically nodded before anxiously delivering her next set of words to me. "And if we just had your dad's updated contact information-to you know, get him a little bit more involved with your academics, not only could it benefit you next year for when you graduate, but your overall career in the future as well!"
