Alexis's POV:

I looked out over the group of horses and sighed. Erik had gotten a hold of Richard and the people were all for going after the rustlers. They didn't care what happened to the Horse King. He could stay for all they cared. But they wanted the rustlers gone and weren't happy with Richard's continual searches for the Horse King. He had gathered a large group of deputies and had intended to go after them in helicopters and cars but Erik had talked them out of it. He knew the country better on the back of Squall and besides, that was the only simple way to get to the where the rustlers were.

He had gathered his men in front of Erik's home. Grandmother and Jewel where with me to keep me calm. After all, Erik was going with them and I was nervous. I knew he would be safe but I was still afraid. He wasn't invisible after all!

The door opened behind me and I turned to see Erik walking into the sunlight of the early morning. Richard growled but didn't make one move. He had sworn not to and at least he was going to stick to his word. Erik whistled and Squall appeared. He walked over to the black mustang and swung on him. I could see some of the men's mouths drop. It was something that he could just walk up to a wild mustang and hop on. Most of them couldn't do that with a tame horse let alone a wild one. I walked over to Squall and looked up at Erik and said,

“Erik, promise you will be careful. I don't want to lose you. This could be dangerous.” He laughed and said,

“My love, don't worry about me. Keep an eye on Jewel and don't let your grandmother get into anything. We should be back in twenty-four hours or less. I will returned to you.” He took my hand and pressed his lips against it. Or really, his mask against it but it was the part that covered his lips. I blushed and he let my hand go. He grabbed the reins of Squall in one hand and said,

“Well, come on. We ain't got all day.” He spurred Squall into a gallop and as he topped the hill he turned to wave to me. I waved back and him and his followers disappeared over the hill. I watched the dust cloud for a while before I walked back into the house.

Grandmother had taken over the kitchen and was busy cooking something for our enjoyment. Jewel was sitting at the piano and playing a piece she had created. I walked over to the guitar and strummed it. I didn't know the first thing about guitars but I had nothing else to do. I played it for a while then dozed. But I couldn't think. I was worried and would be until Erik came back.

Twenty-four Hours Later:

I sighed for the hundredth time in the past hour. Erik said he would be back by now and the hours were slipping by. I watched the clock for a while then looked toward the bedroom where Grandmother and Jewel were sleeping. The sun would be coming up and Erik should have been back by now. I walked over to the window and looked out. My heart leaped into my throat as I saw the first few horses start to come over the hill. I ran out and watched them gather in the yard. Only a few were rider-less and it usually meant their riders were being carried by another because they couldn't ride. My eyes searched for a black mustang but I saw none. My blood started to run cold. I ran towards the lead deputy and said,

“What happened? Where is Erik?!” He dismounted his horse and walked towards me. He cleared his throat and was about to speak when I heard a shrill neigh. A black form loomed on the hill that Erik had last waved to me from. It reared and its mane whipped in the wind. A cloud of dust gathered around its pounding hooves as it raced down the side of the hill. It was Squall and he was rider-less.
