I really should have given up and went to my room. And I was so close to escaping punishment too! But, no... my brain had to freeze on the stupidity side! My self-preservation off through the window!!

"Why?" I asked defiantly, surprising the Duke enough for him to let his arm fall to the armchair for support.

I knew Gobbie was talking about Cedric and that he had caught our letters, where the prince explained the old language to me. But instead of telling me off about me learning something so unladylike and suspicious, he was instead worried I was associating myself with the Prince of the Moon Empire. Why?

Back at the original story, I understood his motivations. He knew about prince Cedric's love for Jenni and that the marriage proposal made to Lucreatia was done just to inflict pain on his older daughter. However, we are still kids and far from marriage proposals... I mean serious and consequential marriage proposals. Not the crap the Duke of the North was trying to pull.

So why?

Gobbie didn't answer me, keeping himself quiet and looking at me with a stare I couldn't understand what it meant. I went forward, stopping by the small table, which still had the tea service, and not even this defiance made him open his mouth.

Gobbie is taking this to his grave, I see...

"Papa, prince Cedric is my friend, which I have little to none right now." I said with steadiness. The Duke's face fell as I pronounced those words. There was a form of deep sadness in his eyes, which unnerved my soul, yet I wouldn't back down. I couldn't. "I need a reason to turn my back on him... so why? Why can I not choose who I become friends with? It's the same with marriage, why can I not choose the person I marry with?"

The Duke looked at me pensively, his eyes calm and warm. He relaxed in his chair before he decided to give me his answer.

"Very well, as long it is only friendship then it should be no problem if kept quiet." He gave me a warning eye, which made me nod automatically."Do not think that I didn't know prince Cedric was using that boutique for his clandestine letters..." that revelation made me gasp and lose some of my confidence. HE KNEW?! "I choose to ignore it until I realized a troublemaker had joined on it as well."

Who? Me?! A troublemaker?! I am in the same bag as those two? I cannot believe in this unfairness!!

Of course, I tried to hide my offense from Gobbie. If he believed I was one, there was not much I could say against it. Not when I had been caught anyway... may as well not add more wood to the growing fire.

This time he got up and went to my side, kneeling in front of me in order to look at me in the eyes.

"Many people would not be happy to know that one of my daughters was associating with the prince of a neighborhood Empire. Be careful." He said as he stroke my arms and waited for my answer. When I nodded in agreement, he gave me a smile and got up. "I think it's best if you leave now to prepare for dinner. We don't want Fanny to have a panic attack for not having you ready in time."

He opened the door and has a cue we find Fanny already in a panic, pacing around in the corridor, hands in her hips. I was not sure if she was worried about the possibility of punishment for both, me and her, or if she was stressed because we were delayed for dinner. Maybe both.

The duke pushed me softly outside of the room before calling Fanny, who came rushing to my side in an instant. Before I could say anything else to Gobbie, he had already closed the door of the drawing-room.

Vague and evasive. And a tad sneaky...

He wouldn't say anything more about the topic, I was sure of that. I suspected that would be the case even under torture. Like a true Moutnero...

The writer was into the mysterious type when she wrote this one... I am 100% sure.

Fanny pushed me along, stressing me about the dinner. When I asked her how it went with the note, she became quiet and avoided my glance. Then it was my time to be in panic mode. I thought she had delivered it!!

Even if the duke said he knew already, it was imperative to warn those people anyway!

I pressed for more information in hushed tones, and she finally caved in.

"I did it my lady, but I needed some help to do it if I were to be undetected by the duke." She said with her eyes glued to the ground.

About to insist on more information, we were interrupted by a gong, which could be heard in all of the building. The dinner would be served very soon... Damn gong... I was so close!!

This energized Fanny a great deal, and instead of continuing her conversation she just pushed me along to my room. Well... there would be time to talk about this, no need to stress myself more with it... yeah right...

There was no need for Fanny to tell me who had helped her. Because standing in my room with an angry face and crossed arms, was Jenni, waiting to know why I did not tell her about my letters to prince Cedric.

It took quite an effort to apologize and explain everything while being ready by an over rushed Fanny. But with my innate cuteness and Jenni's big sister kindness I was able to succeed and get another ally.

A win for me!

Now time for dinner! Yay!

What do you think of the duke? Do you believe in his words?
