Cora and I were back on the deserted private part of the beach I liked so much. It was sunset, a soft hue of pink and orange coupled with the rich yellow sun brightened the sky as it set for the day. There was almost no wind right now which pleased me greatly. The girls and I, including Naomi this time, had visited Cece in the hospital but there was no change in her condition. She was still pale and sickly lying in her hospital bed helpless and waiting to be rescued. I had spoken to Cora about what had happened at the sushi place and told her the symptoms Cece had shown- Cora agreed with me, Kalum had something to do with it. That was now two of my friends in mortal danger because of that scumbag. Just what was he up to?

But right now, I needed to learn how to break Naomi's curse. Cece was fairly stable in her condition but Naomi was not. Her love struck state of mind could cause her to act out at any moment. We also contacted Cece's family but they were over seas for the holidays and couldn't come back to see their daughter until they had booked flights and organised the trip home. So, It was up to me to find a way to expel the poison from her system. No pressure, right?

'So,' Cora started. 'I need to know how far along you are in your power control over water. So, see that rock pool? I'm going to ask you to manipulate the water in various ways and I need you to try your hardest to pull it off.'

The excitement was making me jittery. I had been looking forward to this. I stood over a small rock pool filled with tiny spiral shells and glittery gooey seaweed. 'Ready.' I confirmed to her.

'Great, now please make a column of water.' Cora had her hands on her hips and eyes narrowed, focusing on my technique.

I concentrated my min and held my palm out over the water with my fingers outstretched horizontally. It was a few seconds before I felt the tingling in my finger tips and it startled me a little bit. I want to stop and itch them. Slowly, the water started to rise up out of the rock pool in a clear flowing column. I had to wonder where the extra water was coming from, but that was more of a side note than an actual question. Cora would get irritated if I bothered her with such questions. I doubted she would know anyway.

'Good.' Cora yelled excitedly. It jolted me and the clear water bent side ways before straightening out again. 'Sorry.' She laughed. 'Now, freeze it.'

I felt a chill go down my spine and I straightened my fingers in a high five motion. It took a few seconds, but then the water began to freeze over turning an icy white and completely solid. I could see my reflection in it. The water was beautiful to gaze at.

'A bit slow, but for a self-taught mermaid not too bad,' I heard Cora murmur. 'Next,' she announced, 'Melt the water and evaporate it please. I wanna see some steam!'

I resisted the urge to smirk and get cocky in my abilities, nodded acknowledgement and clenched my fist, the water started to melt from its icy state back to clear liquid and then it was bubbling and steaming.

'You can drop it now; I've seen what I need to.' She waved her hand dismissing me.

I relaxed my hand and at once and the water splashed back into the rock pool. A few droplets sprayed the rocks.

Cora clapped her hands together happily. 'You could work on that ending, it was a bit rough around the edges. You're further along than I thought.'

'Thanks.' I smiled. The perfectionist in me wanted to be annoyed that she was pointing out what I did wrong but that was the whole point in having her teach me, so that I could get better.  'I did practice as soon as I could when I first discovered I had control over water.'

'No, it's not just that. It's like your powers just developed really quickly- maybe to make up for lost time. I wonder...Do you know how to make plasma by any chance?' Cora once again had her thinking face on.
