"You know, usually the one doing the calling typically speaks first."

"Shh!"

"Sophie-"

"I said, 'Shh!'"

"Why?"

"Because I'm thinking of something to say!"

"Well, how long do I have to wait for you to think? I'm in the middle of a thrilling game of chess."

"Yeah, said no one, ever."

"Soph-"

"Shh! I'm still thinking."

"I'm still waiting- rook to A3- are you done thinking yet?"

"No."

"May I ask why you are thinking?"

"I'm trying to work out what I could possibly say to you after last night."

"Why what happened last night?"

"You know what, Daniel."

"No, I really don't."

"The stupid call that you weren't supposed to overhear!"

"I thought we were forgetting that happened."

"Well, I can't! God, I am beyond mortified that you heard any part of it."

"I liked the plan that we- bishop to H3- that we don't discuss any of it."

"Why?"

"Because if we have to talk about yours and Charlotte's conversation, then we need to address the fact that you were annoyed with me. Are annoyed with me."

"Why is life so complicated?"

"If it weren't complicated then it wouldn't be life."

"Ok, so we have two things to address. The first being what you heard and the second being the fact that I'm annoyed with you. Shall we discuss the issues in the order I gave?"

"Yes - No! Ok, um, knight to F3- in the order is fine."

"Who are you playing against?"

"What?"

"Chess. Who are you playing against?"

"Baxterley, my grandmother's butler."

"Connie has a butler?"

"Who the hell is Connie?"

"Your grandmother."

"You call my grandmother, 'Connie?'"

"Constance is such a mouthful."

"But, really? Connie? - Excuse me?- Baxterley says that my grandfather used to call my grandmother Connie in private. I didn't know that."

"Now you do. So, my conversation with Charlotte. We were discussing Luc and his doctor's appointment."

"Yes, and then?"
